Fred M. Locke -- A Biography

Fred M. Locke A Biography Author: Elton N. Gish
Pages: 343
Cover/Size: Soft Cover, 8 1/2" x 11"
Description: Fred M. Locke is considered to be the "Father of porcelain insulators". He designed the first high voltage porcelain insulator in 1894, sold glass insulators based on his designs for many years, and started his own porcelain factory in Victor, N.Y. in 1898 and the Lima Insulator Co. in 1904. The book gives a complete historical account of this most interesting individual and his family as well as a multitude of new facts about Imperial Porcelain Works, R. Thomas & Sons Co., Electric Porcelain & Mfg. Co., and Lima Insulator Co. The biography includes almost 100 original photographs of Fred Locke, his family and home, the Locke and Lima factories, and glass and porcelain insulators he designed and produced from 1892 until 1916. Mr. Locke had glass insulators made to his designs by Hemingray Glass Co., Brookfield Glass Co., and Corning Glass Works including insulators made from his glass patents from 1909 to 1916. About 150 illustrations and advertisements from period trade journals guide the reader through the interesting career of this fascinating and unique man. His 61 patents are discussed in detail. Scale drawings and photographs of each style of his glass and porcelain insulators are included. This book provides great insight into the problems of developing and manufacturing insulators for the high voltage power industry. Also, many of Fred Locke's sons were inventors in their own right, and their interesting lives are also revealed as well as how Mr. Locke's wife aided him with his early electrical experiments. Mr. Locke's glass patents (some closely resemble Pyrex glass) were used to make Space Shuttle windows and kitchen stove tops. New facts provide an insight into Fry's relationship with Fred Locke and Corning as well as the unique glass formula Fry used in their limited production of insulators.
